The Role of Spark Plugs in Your BMW’s Engine

Spark plugs are indispensable in the combustion process in your BMW’s engine. They are made of an insulated electrode in the center, insulated wire, and an ignition coil or magneto circuit with a grounded terminal. There’s one spark plug per cylinder, with the plug’s tip protruding inside each chamber. To create a spark, the ignition coil generates a high voltage when the ignition switch is turned on. The ensuing spark causes a controlled explosion inside the engine, and the process happens several thousands of times per minute. Without functioning spark plugs, the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber will have trouble igniting.

What Causes Spark Plugs to Wear Out?

A fairly common cause of worn spark plugs is fouling from oil leaks. Since spark plugs are electrical devices, any buildup of oil particles on them becomes an insulator, interrupting the flow of electricity between electrodes. The result is a misfire on the affected engine, leading to a loss of power, diminished fuel efficiency, and rough idling. Oil leaks can be caused by many things, such as broken piston rings, a leaking gasket, or overfilled engine oil. It’s crucial on your next oil change to check for any oil leaks, no matter how small.
